Go Build Georgia, the Savannah-Chatham Public School System and Chatham County?s business community are taking another step towards building Georgia?s skilled workforce.?The new Maritime Logistics Internship Program follows Go Build Georgia?s emphasis on giving career-minded students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a field that interests them and how to take steps toward an exciting career and a promising future by learning a skilled trade.
Students honored at the December 6th kick-off of the Maritime Logistics Internship Program.
The program officially kicked off with a celebration held on December 6, 2012, that brought together education and business leaders from across the state to honor the first group of students who will participate in the program.?With the increasing need for workers with trade skills across the county, these students will get an on-the-job view of hundreds of different jobs available in the Maritime and Logistics industries. This industry is especially important to Georgia and the Savannah area with the proposed deepening of the Savannah River Channel. Gov. Nathan Deal has already pledged funding for the project, which is expected to greatly increase the amount of sea traffic and job growth in the region.
The program began earlier this year when Dave Mihuta, Freightliner of Savannah, and representatives from the Georgia Ports Authority wanted to collaborate with the local school system to design a program that would educate and interest students in careers in logistics. They wanted to let students know that there are opportunities for high-paying jobs and careers in Savannah. At the same time, they wanted to help grow a skilled workforce to fill the hundreds of jobs available in maritime and logistics.?From this meeting, the Maritime Logistics Education Taskforce (MLET) was created. MLET is part of Governor Deal?s ?Go Build Georgia? initiative, the first of its kind in the state. Dr. Thomas Lockamy, Superintendent of Schools, and Aretha Rhone-Bush, Executive Director of High Schools and Compensatory Programs gave MLET their enthusiastic support. Dr. Lewis and her staff also wrote the curriculum for the Maritime Logistics program pathway, which was approved by the Georgia Department of Education. The pathway is being taught this year for the first time in Georgia at Groves High School.
In the Maritime Logistics Internship Program, students learn and train in the processes of maritime logistics. ?Students will learn about export, import, supply chain management and the different careers that go along with that,? said Dr. Lewis. ?Not only will they get the educational piece in the classroom, but they will also have the opportunity to get some hands-on real-life experience.??Juniors and seniors from local high schools will participate in this year?s program. The applicants are evaluated on criteria including interest, teacher references, graduation date, and disciplinary records.

In March 2013, MLET students begin a paid internship, receiving on-the-job training each week.?The MLET program is a win-win for industry and education. Companies have the opportunity to ?grow their own? workforce by introducing students to careers in maritime and logistics. Students receive on-the-job training, paid work experience, and the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities to prospective employers. They will have a head start on a first resume with solid work experience and possible references for future employment.
?This is a wonderful opportunity,? said Dr. Lewis. ??forming this partnership will allow education to extend past the four walls of the school building. I want these kids to be able to step up to the plate, learn and take pride in what we have taught them. I am very passionate about it.?
This partnership is an example of how Go Build Georgia?s focus on education and industry can work together to plan for and work towards a skilled future for Georgia.
