If you?re like many busy business owners, chances are you haven?t updated your online security in a while. Many business owners are willing to take a chance on whatever system they have in place and don?t even know:

? If it?s active ? If it automatically updates ? Whether it?s working

Most of us assume the security software is ?doing what it?s designed to do?: protecting our online presence, but guess what? It?s not enough to ?think? everything?s okay. Here are some things you can do to ensure you?re protected.

1) Microsoft has a collection of compatible antivirus vendors and a lot of them are free. And if you?re still running some old, and I do mean old versions of Windows, check out Windows XP on Google.

2) For you Mac users, try Sophos Anti-Virus or Norton?s iAntivirus.

3) And if you are Linux users, there?s help for you, too. Try Linux Anti-Virus .As an added measure, keep your firewall enabled.

Heads up, though. The firewall on Macs is strangely disabled by default, so be aware of that. There are few things more agonizing than having your security compromised or losing important data. Remember to:

1). Always backup you data. Think of it like a haircut. Once hair is cut, it?s hard to get it back. Same with data. Once it?s gone, it?s hard to get it back without backup. Are you backing up on an external drive? Just be sure to use an online file-sharing services like Dropbox to make sure those locations are also being protected.

2) Consider disconnecting automatic login and set the computer so that a password is needed to open it. It cuts down on convenience, true. But, your protection is worth a little inconvenience.

3) While sharing passwords or using clever ones is tempting, don?t. Case in point: hackers were able to crack Linked In passwords with everyone who used ?Link? as part of their password?

4) Don?t automatically download software that you know nothing about, just because the popup says you need it. Do the research.

5) Avoid questionable sites. Your business is your business, but going on socially unacceptable sites will increase your chances of a breach in security, exposing you to harmful software.

6) By the same token, avoid clicking on links you?re unfamiliar with. As busy business owners, we sometimes click at lightning speed through emails, only to open ones that can contain viruses that infect our computers and anyone we forward email to.

Not everyone is security savvy. Alert your friends and associates if something they have sent you is infected. By being aware of these protective measures and updating your online security, you can better ensure that precious time and important data won?t be lost.

Queen plays cameo with 007 at eccentric Games opening

LONDON (Reuters) - James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Britain's Queen Elizabeth stole the show at a spectacular 2012 Olympic opening on Friday, appearing together in a comic film beamed to 60,000 people in the main stadium and a billion viewers around the world.

After a an eccentric and exuberant trip through British history and culture, athletes took center stage in London as the Greek team kept Olympic tradition and led out thousands of competitors dressed in national costumes.

They marched around the stadium in double quick time, urged on by the up-tempo beats of the Bee Gees band and others, and the world's fastest man Usain Bolt strod confidently with the Jamaican flag while playing up to cameras and cheering fans.

Libya and Egypt represented a new chapter in their history after the tumultuous events of the Arab Spring, while the first female Olympic athletes from Saudi Arabia, Brunei and Qatar made history by making an appearance.

Earlier, footage featuring the 86-year-old monarch complemented a show that "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle turned into an unabashed celebration of the host nation stamped with an unmistakably cinematic style.

While it struck the wrong note with some media commentators covering the ceremony around the world, the packed live audience was swept along in the drama.

In the tongue-in-cheek film Craig wears his trademark tuxedo and enters Buckingham Palace. The queen, with two corgis at her feet and in her cinematic debut, turns from a writing desk and says simply: "Good evening, Mr. Bond."

The moment drew a huge cheer from the crowd, not used to seeing Her Majesty play such an informal part in proceedings, and coincides with a resurgence in the royal family's popularity following the 2011 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Doubles of Bond and the queen then parachuted from a helicopter above the stadium, built on the Olympic Park in a once derelict area of London's East End, and the national anthem sang by schoolchildren and Union flag raising followed.

The surreal footage and stunt had been kept a closely guarded secret in the buildup to the ceremony, which ends with the lighting of the Olympic cauldron.

Over the following 17 days, the drama of sporting contest takes hold the length and breadth of Britain as more than 16,000 athletes from 204 countries will strive to achieve their ultimate dream - Olympic gold.

The ceremony, inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and backed by rousing music from across the centuries, began with a playful recreation of an English rural idyll with grassy meadows, fences, hedges, a water mill, maypoles and a cottage.

A cast including shepherdesses, sheep, geese, dogs and a village cricket team filled the stage during the one-hour prologue to the show that included a dramatic, low-level fly-past by the jets of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows stunt team.

After "England's green and pleasant land" came the "dark Satanic mills" of William Blake's famous poem.

Titled "Pandemonium", the next phase saw the grass uprooted and fences torn down to be replaced by a blackened landscape of looms and foundries that conjured the Industrial Revolution.

To the deafening beat of hundreds of drummers, giant chimneys rose from the ground and began to belch smoke as a small army of volunteers, dressed as 19th century factory workers, forged one of the five Olympic rings.

The giant orb was raised to the sky to join the four others, letting off a fountain of sparks and drawing gasps from many in the audience.

All around, especially designed "pixel" light boxes installed next to every seat accompanied each scene and created giant images of waves, flags and words.

In the second of three "acts", Boyle paid homage to the National Health Service, an emotive subject in Britain where people hold the right to free health care close to their hearts.

Hundreds of dancing and roller-skating nurses and doctors pushed beds on to the now empty stage, and when the beds were illuminated, they spelled "GOSH" for the cherished Great Ormond Street children's hospital in London.

"The atmosphere was electric coming out into the stadium - like we could take over the world with our beds!" said Rachel Dobbin, a speech and language therapist from London who performed as a nurse in the ceremony.

"I want to do it again, even in spite of all the rainy rehearsals!"

VOLDEMORT VS POPPINS

Giant representations of famous villains from English literature, including J.M. Barrie's Captain Hook, J.K. Rowling's Voldemort and Ian Fleming's Childcatcher, rose from their beds.

They were quickly vanquished by dozens of Mary Poppins characters descending from cables criss-crossing the stadium roof, carrying brightly illuminated umbrellas.

Comedian Rowan Atkinson, adopting the globally recognized character of mischievous Mr. Bean, brought the house down as he joined the London Symphony Orchestra playing a single note throughout the score to Olympic film "Chariots of Fire".

The final act, starring hundreds of young nightclubbing dancers, was a breathless journey through popular British culture over the last five decades, featuring music from everyone from the Sex Pistols to Queen and the Jam to the Who.

Sitting at a computer outside a small house on stage was Tim Berners-Lee, the Londoner who invented the world wide web and enabled the explosion of social networking that is playing a major part at the London Games.

Mid-ceremony he tweeted to his almost 83,000 followers "This is for everyone".

Soccer player and A-list celebrity David Beckham played a brief part, filmed steering a boat that sped along the River Thames with the Olympic torch on board.

At one end of the stadium stands a grassy knoll topped by a tree and at the other end the 23-tonne bell, which Bradley Wiggins, Britain's winner of this year's Tour de France, rang to kick off proceedings.

Among the crowd were celebrities, ordinary Londoners, visitors from abroad and dignitaries including U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama as well as presidents, prime ministers and European royalty.

Boyle paid tribute to the 10,000 volunteers, cast and crew taking part in the ceremony which had as its theme "Inspire a Generation".

"We hope the feeling of the show is a celebration of generosity," he said. "There's no better expression of that than these volunteers."

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney will be among the many performers on the night, but the biggest secret of all - who has the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the end of the show - remains a mystery.

Also, since LED produces nearly no heat our house is cooler in the summer without the extra heat from bulbs.

BBC - Wales Nature: No sign of a swift recovery

The bad weather this summer has had a negative affect on the UK swift population, mentioned in a recent article on BBC News.

This follows on from a recent RSPB report which mentions that the population of swifts visiting the UK each summer to breed is nearly a third lower than it was in the mid-1990s.

Swifts are now on the amber list and birds of Conservation Concern as their numbers have declined dramatically in the past 10 years

This year's spate of bad weather has resulted in fewer flying insects for swifts to eat.

I've seen a fair few out and about this summer while working on BBC Wales Weatherman Walking, both at Burry Port and Cardiff Bay Nature Reserve but not in any great numbers.

A lack of nest sites is also causing problems as older buildingsd are being renovated and newer buildings don't provide a suitable space for swifts to nest in.

Jenna Jameson pleads not guilty to DUI charges

WESTMINSTER, Calif. (AP) ? Former adult film star Jenna Jameson has pleaded not guilty to driving under the influence when she struck a light pole in Southern California.

Jameson was arrested on May 25 after her Range Rover struck the pole in Westminster, resulting in minor injuries. Prosecutors in Orange County say tests showed her blood-alcohol level was .05 percent above the state legal limit.

Jameson was charged with three misdemeanor counts, including driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving with a blood-alcohol level over the state legal limit and driving on a suspended license.

She entered her plea on Tuesday.

Jameson's attorney, John Marshall Kremer, told City News Service that his client declined to comment.

Jameson crossed into the mainstream after publishing a popular autobiography in 2004.

Mexican league carrying new name, many contenders

MEXICO CITY (AP) -Trying to predict a Mexican champion each year is a treacherous business, and it will be no different when the season opens on Friday with six clubs favored.

Pachuca, Cruz Azul, Pumas, Tigres, Monterrey and Santos Laguna are all considered contenders to win the first-division title in a league bearing a new name: Liga MX.

Santos Laguna won the Clausura last season - the second half of Mexico's split season - and Tigres won the Apertura, the first half.

Most of the attention will be on Hugo Sanchez taking over at Pachuca, his first job in his homeland since being fired in 2008 as Mexico coach.

Argentine Ricardo La Volpe, another former Mexico coach, steps in at Atlante. La Volpe coached Mexico at the 2006 World Cup before leading Mexican club Atlas, Costa Rica's national team and Argentine team Banfield.

Play opens on Friday with Jagaures vs. Tigres and Tijuana vs. Puebla.

On Saturday, it's: Cruz Azul vs. Morelia, Queretaro vs. Leon, Santo Laguna vs. San Luis, Monterrey vs. America and Atlas vs. Pumas. On Sunday: Toluca vs. Chivas Guadalajara and Atlante vs. Pachuca.

"I want Pachuca to be in a golden age," said Sanchez, who just completed an unsuccessful stint at Spanish club Almeria. "I want victories and championships."

Sanchez can't complain about not being supported. The club signed three key players for him - Paraguay defender Paulo Da Silva from Spain's Zaragoza, Raul Tamudo from Spain's Rayo Vallecano, and Nery Castillo from Greek club Aris Salonica.

Cruz Azul, which has not won a league title since 1997, has also beefed up. The club has added Mexican Pablo Barrera, Colombian defender Luis Amarano Perea and Argentine forward Mariano Pavone. Guillermo Vazquez takes over as coach from Enrique Meza.

"My experience will help turn around the situation here, going so long without a title," said Perea, who played last season for Spain's Atletico de Madrid, which won the Europa League.

Guadalajara Chivas is not expected to contend but has made big changes.

The club hired Dutch coach John Van't Ship, a move led by club adviser Johan Cruyff. Cruyff, the Dutch great and former Barcelona coach, was appointed by club owner Jorge Vergara to deflect criticism of his management of one of Mexico's most popular teams.

Van't Ship replaced Ignacio Ambriz, who left the club after failing to get a new contract.

"I see a talented team that could go far," Van't Ship said. "I think we can finish up near the top, but right now we have to get ourselves equal with clubs that are more balanced and have more experience."

Calculations reveal fine line for hydrogen release from storage materials

Hydrogen, the simplest and most abundant element on Earth, is a promising energy carrier for emerging clean energy technology. Hydrogen is the energy carrier that powers fuel cells in electric cars, and can be used to store energy generated by renewable sources at times of low demand.

A major challenge with hydrogen energy is meeting the dual goals of high storage density and efficient kinetics for hydrogen release when it is needed.

Scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, have shed new light on the kinetics of hydrogen release, or dehydrogenation, from aluminum hydride (AlH3), a material that is highly promising for energy storage. Their computer simulations also illuminate the basic mechanisms governing these chemical reactions in general.

"Aluminum hydride turns out to be promising because the binding energy for hydrogen is low, so that the release rate can be fast," explained Chris Van de Walle, a professor in the Materials Department and head of the Computational Materials group at UCSB. "At the same time, kinetic barriers are high enough to prevent the hydrogen release rate from being too fast."

Drs. Lars Ismer and Anderson Janotti in the Computational Materials group used computer simulations to investigate the microscopic mechanisms that drive hydrogen release from aluminum hydride. They performed cutting-edge, first-principles calculations to examine how individual hydrogen atoms diffuse through the aluminum hydride ? a process they found to be enabled by the creation of hydrogen vacancies. Their findings were detailed in a paper "Dehydrogenation of AlH3 via the Vacancy Clustering Mechanism" published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry.

Hydrogen vacancies are defects that play an important role ? they enable diffusion. If every atom is in place, none of the atoms would be able to move. If a hydrogen atom is missing, a neighboring hydrogen atom can jump into that vacancy, thus enabling motion of hydrogen through the material.

The group then extracted key parameters from these highly sophisticated calculations, and used them in Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations aimed at modeling how hydrogen is released, leaving clusters of aluminum atoms behind.

"This multi-scale approach allows us to take the highly accurate information obtained in the first-principles computations and employ it to model realistic system sizes and time scales," said Ismer. "We can monitor the nucleation and growth of the aluminum phase and the rate at which hydrogen is released."

An important feature of the simulations is that they allowed the researchers to identify the rate-limiting mechanism, which turned out to be the diffusion process. This result initially seemed to contradict conclusions from studies using the traditional interpretation of the observed S-shaped onset of the dehydrogenation curves, which ruled out diffusion as the rate-limiting factor. However, the UCSB team's simulations produced reaction curves in agreement with the measurements, while clearly indicating that the reaction is limited by diffusion of point defects.

"These concepts transcend the specific application to hydrogen-storage materials," said Van de Walle. "The broader lesson here is that caution should be exercised in drawing conclusions based solely on the shape of reaction curves. Those simple rules of thumb were developed back in the 1930s, when experiments were less sophisticated and computational studies were unheard of. Our present work strongly suggests that traditional assumptions based on the shape of reaction curves should be reexamined."

Internet providers bracing for calls about malware

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Internet providers have plans to help their customers Monday and others are braced for calls to helplines because thousands around the country whose computers were infected with malicious software more than a year ago faced the possibility of not being able to get online.

Internet users scanning their Twitter feeds or Facebook accounts Sunday were encouraged to add one more quick click to check their computer for malware.

Some providers may put technical solutions in place that will correct the server problem that could hit some computers after midnight EDT Sunday. It they do, the Internet will work, but the malware will remain on victims' computers and could pose future problems, said Tom DeGrasso, an FBI supervisory special agent.

After midnight EDT Sunday, the FBI was shutting down the Internet servers set up as a temporary safety net to keep infected computers online for the past eight months. The court order the agency obtained to keep the servers running expired, and it was not renewed.

The problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. When the FBI went in to take down the hackers late last year, agents realized that if they turned off the malicious servers being used to control the computers, all the victims would lose their Internet service.

In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up the safety net. The bureau brought in a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.

The FBI arranged for a private company to run a website ? http://www.dcwg.org ? as a place where computer users could go to see if their computer was infected and find links to other computer security business sites where they could find fixes for the problem.

From the onset, most victims didn't even know their computers were infected, although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software, making their machines more vulnerable to other problems.

Many computer users don't understand the complex machines they use every day to send email, shop, and cruise for information. The cyberworld of viruses, malware, bank fraud and Internet scams is often distant and confusing, and warning messages may go unseen or unheeded.

Also, some people simply don't trust the government, and believe that federal authorities are only trying to spy on them or take over the Internet. Blogs and other Internet forums are riddled with postings warning of the government using the malware as a ploy to breach American citizens' computers. That's a charge the FBI and other cybersecurity experts familiar with the malware quickly denounce as ridiculous.

Still, the Internet is flooded with conspiracy theories:

"I think the FBI just wants everyone to go to that website to check our computers so they can check our computers as well. Just a way to steal data for their own research," one computer user said in a posting on the Internet.

Another observed: "Yet another ploy to get everyone freaked out ... remember Y2K."

There is an underlying sense that this will be much ado about nothing, such as the approach of 2000. The transition to that year presented technical problems and fears that some computers would stop working because they were not set up for the date change. In the end there were very few problems.

Considering there are millions of Internet users across the country, several thousand isn't a big deal, unless you're one of them.

Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., and co-founder of Congress' cybersecurity caucus, said computer users have a responsibility to practice good sense and make sure their computers are not infected or being hijacked by criminals.

"These types of issues are only going to increase as our society relies more and more on the Internet, so it is a reminder that everyone can do their part," he said.

FBI officials have been tracking the number of computers they believe still may be infected by the malware. As of Wednesday, there were about 45,600 in the U.S. ? nearly 20,000 less than a week ago. Worldwide, the total is roughly 250,000 infected. The numbers have declined steadily, and recent efforts by Internet service providers may limit the problems on Monday.

By Monday, if your computer isn't functioning properly, customer support lines could be your best solution.

Fiscal zombie apocalypse in Washington? Obama and Congress on taxes.

Lawmakers and the White House keep putting off tough fiscal and political decisions until after the elections, prompting criticism that this is a 'Zombie Congress.'

GOP presidential aspirant Mitt Romney whacks President Obama for presiding over a ?zombie economy.? Rep. Jim Cooper (D) of Tennesee says Congress is remiss in its duties by putting off tough financial decisions until after the election, a season he calls the ?zombie Congress? for the number of lawmakers who won?t be back in the new year.

And even more ghoulish, the last two years of economic policymaking in Washington show a White House and Congress beset by a recurring set of fiscal issues. If Washington deals with these problems at all, it's only temporarily, thus setting the nation on a course of constant fiscal crisis and brinksmanship, until Congress musters the political will to resolve them.

The White House had its own brush with the living dead Monday as President Obama reanimated perhaps the most gruesome of all the nation?s undead issues by arguing for a one-year extension of the Bush tax cuts for households making less than $250,000.

What Mr. Obama largely skipped over in his speech from the White House?s East Room? What happens in one year.

In other words, even as economists and lawmakers aligned with both parties decry the negative impact of uncertainty around taxing and spending on the nation?s economy, the issue of what the vast majority of Americans should pay to Uncle Sam will be upon us again in (at best) 12 months.

A look at the year-end fiscal cliff ? or an accumulation of expiring taxing and spending provisions expected to take $560 billion out of the US economy ? shows the extent to which Washington can?t put its financial demons to rest.

There?s some $400 billion in higher taxes, including the expiration of the Bush tax rates (extended by Obama in 2010), a temporary reduction in the Social Security payroll tax (passed in the lame duck session of Congress in 2011), and a host of other measures requiring annual congressional action, such as the need to patch the Alternative Minimum Tax (which saves middle-class taxpayers from a stinging tax increase)?and to implement the ?doc fix,? which prevents doctors from seeing their Medicare reimbursement rates slashed.

There?s $26 billion in expiring emergency unemployment benefits (extended several times since 2009). Finally, there?s $76 billion in cuts from the Budget Control Act, a deficit-capping deal struck in the heat of last summer?s negotiations to raise the national debt ceiling. Those cuts are coming into effect because Congress, recognizing its zombie problem, put automatic cuts into law in case Congress couldn?t determine an alternative path to reducing the deficit.?

Congress couldn?t figure it out, so here come the cuts.

Without a solution to a swarm of problems Washington has dealt with on a temporary basis for the last two years, America risks a further downgrade of its credit rating (by postponing any budget-balancing measures) or toppling back into a recession (by allowing all of the spending cuts and tax increases that would hit Jan. 1 to take effect.)

"We can't keep kicking the can down the road," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, in a statement after Obama?s speech Monday. "No question, the fiscal cliff is bad economic policy and going over it will put us back into recession. But enlarging the mountain of debt we face would be disastrous as well ? we have to rely on a more responsible approach. These problems only get harder to solve the longer we delay."
