Soundbars with wireless subwoofers can certainly sound impressive, because that big 15-pound block you keep next to your couch can make the room shake without much effort. Because of this, when shopping for a system, it's easy to ignore the soundbar speaker itself, which gives you all of the audio above approximately 100Hz. Dialog, music, sound effects, and anything that isn't completely bass-driven suffers if the soundbar doesn't do its job. Unfortunately, the Vizio SB402M-A1 is proof of that. Its subwoofer is capable and its $229.99 (direct) price tag is right, but the soundbar just doesn't have enough depth or power to give the midrange and treble response enough impact.

Design
The soundbar itself is 40.1 inches wide and 4.1 inches high on its removable silver-colored feet, and measures only 2.1 inches deep. It weighs a svelte 4.8 pounds, and can easily be placed in front of your TV or mounted on a wall. The front is covered with a cloth grille interrupted in the middle by a glossy plastic rectangle with a silver Vizio logo and a blue LCD display. The ends are capped with silver-colored trim that give the soundbar a slightly more distinguished look. The top of the soundbar holds Power, Input, and Volume Up/Down buttons flush against a glossy plastic shell. The back holds the power port facing outward and a USB port, analog input, coaxial input, and optical input set facing right or down inside recessed areas, which are designed to make the ports accessible when the soundbar is mounted on a wall.

The wireless subwoofer is nondescript and black, measuring 12.8 by 8.5 by 11.3 inches (HWD) and weighing 10.9 pounds. The front, top, and back are black plastic, while the sides are covered in cloth grilles. A side-firing port sits on the back. It comes pre-paired with the soundbar, so all you have to do is plug it in, make sure it's within about 30 feet of the soundbar, and enjoy the bass.

The remote is large, chunky, and simple, measuring 4.4 inches long and 0.6 inches thick. It holds Power, Input, Mute, and Menu buttons, plus a direction pad that doubles as playback and volume control. The remote isn't backlit, but it's easy enough to use blindly.

Performance
Speakers need room in the cabinet to resonate, and while the big, chunky subwoofer has plenty of space for bass, the soundbar is too thin to produce satisfying midrange. Rage Against The Machine's "Guerilla Radio" sounded notably tinny, with the richer drumbeats and guitar lines sounding hollow and jangly. The subwoofer produced decent deep bass, but when the bass crept over the crossover and requires the soundbar's drivers, it lost a lot of its weight.

The tinny trebles and mediocre midrange was apparent in Tron: Legacy, where the sweeping, alien soundtrack of Daft Punk had plenty of force thanks to the subwoofer. But dialog sounded comparatively fuzzy, and crashing and shattering sound effects lacked much texture. Anything that wasn't deep bass had a distinct lack of warmth, and the soundbar sounded decidedly inferior on all fronts compared to the Sony HT-CT260 soundbar.

The Vizio SB4021M-A1 is an affordable sidebar with a nice design, but it doesn't fare particularly well with audio performance. If you can spend a little more, the Editors' Choice Sony HT-CT260 offers much better midrange and treble response, and features built-in Bluetooth to boot.

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Joanna Silverman and I am an Isis Parenting consultant and mother of two. As an Isis consultant, one of my roles is working with families to encourage healthy eating habits and supporting families of babies/toddlers who are resistant and picky eaters. As a mother, I have always taken pride in the food choices I have provided for my family, and am a strong advocate for only serving whole foods. I didn?t start this blog post to bore you by telling you all of my roles, but to prepare you for the irony I am currently experiencing. My Son Refused To Eat Solid Food. Here is our story, or maybe I should say, our journey?

When my daughter was 5 months old, she showed all the signs of being ready to eat. She moved her mouth when we ate, she reached for food, and she moved forward towards the spoon. One morning I woke up early, mashed up some avocados, mixed it with breast milk, put the spoon to her mouth, she moved forward, put the spoon in her mouth, and ate every bite until she had eaten an entire half of avocado. From that day on, she ate almost everything I put in front of her (until she was a toddler, but that?s another story!). I had done my job as a mother. I was clear on my role (providing her what I wanted her to eat, when, and where) and she had done her job (she ate, and stopped when she was full).

Drew before, refusing everything

When my son was born, I assumed it would pan out the same way, until three months ago. Drew was showing all the same signs of being ready to eat solid food. I began the same way, happily mashing avocados, mixing it with my breast milk, put the spoon to his mouth, and he went for it, put the food in his mouth, gagged and began screaming. Surely this was just a case of him not being used to the flavor, I thought, and I tried again. This time he would not open his mouth at all. My professional self said, it?s okay he is just not ready; wait a week or two and try again. So that is what I did, and I was met with the same response. Again, my professional self said, this is not a big deal, he is a few days short of 6 months, give him some time, he is not ready. Perhaps this would be a good time to tell you what my mother self was telling me, he better eat soon because I can?t exclusively nurse him for too much longer; I don?t have enough milk to meet his needs. Also, I thought by 6 months he would be eating solids and I would not be his only source of nourishment. If I were being completely honest, I saw a glimpse of the finish line of nursing and someone moved it on me.

Once Drew was 6 months old and still not eating, I hit the ground running. I attempted to feed him every day, anything and everything I could imagine. I was always met with the same response, gagging, tongue thrusting, and tears. After several weeks of this exposure to food, he no longer opened his mouth to the spoon. This is when I started to do the one thing I tell parents never to do, I started pushing. I knew when I was doing it that it was not the right thing to do. I knew I was harming our eating relationship. I knew I should trust his instincts with the process and relax. But I couldn?t, I needed him to eat. I needed him to eat so I knew that he was getting nourished. As a nursing mother, I wanted to know that his nutritional needs were not all up to me. I needed him to eat because the doctor said he should and because I knew how good it feels as a mother to have your child full and satisfied. So, I started to push food into his mouth any chance I could (when he opened his mouth for a toy, or to cry). I began obsessing about getting him to eat. I tried different locations, spoons, foods, temperatures, brands, and textures. ?I even tried having everyone I know feed him. And guess what? He still would not eat!

Drew after, exploring on his own

After I consulted with a trusted Isis colleague, I realized just how far away from what I know as a professional I had gone. I no longer trusted him or his instincts. I started to believe that I knew what was best for him and that this was a behavior I needed to conquer. Then I remembered the very simple thing I say over and over regarding resistant eaters, ?Eating is not the first objective, experiencing the food is?. My only job is to expose him to a variety of nutritional foods and allow him the opportunity and space to decide when and if he is going to eat. I realized I needed to do what I have advised so many families to do; provide him the opportunity to explore food.

As hard as it can be, I no longer offer Drew the spoon from my hand. I place it on the tray along with a variety of other foods I am eating. We sit together and I eat while he eats. He happily sits in his high chair and explores the food, both in his hand and in his mouth. After several weeks of doing this, he is slowly beginning to swallow some food. While I still wish he ate more, I know the eating process has started.? It has not started the way I envisioned it would; it has started the way he needed it to.?

Sears Canada profit falls on weak electronics sales

(Reuters) - Department store chain Sears Canada Inc's fourth-quarter profit fell 3 percent on lower sales of hardware and home electronic goods.

Revenue at the company, which is struggling to turn around its business ahead of U.S. retailer Target Corp's Canadian launch this spring, fell 5 percent to C$1.29 billion ($1.25 billion).

Net earnings fell to C$39.9 million ($38.8 million), or 39 Canadian cents per share, from C$41 million, or 39 Canadian cents per share, a year earlier.

Fourth-quarter profit included a pretax gain of C$29.7 million from the sale of a joint venture interest and a voluntary buyout program, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Adjusted EBIDTA fell 39 percent to C$62.4 million.

Parent Sears Holdings Corp , which cut its stake in Sears Canada to 51 percent from 90 percent in November, said in January that Sears Canada's fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA would fall by about half.

Sales at established stores, a key measure for retailers, fell 3.8 percent in the fourth quarter on lower sales of home electronics and snowblowers.

Sears Holding said in January that sales at the Canadian unit were affected by unseasonably warm temperatures in parts of Canada.

Rival retailer Canadian Tire Corp said last week same-store sales fell 1.1 percent due to the late onset of winter in Ontario and Quebec.

Canadian retail sales plunged 2.1 percent in December amid slumping new-car sales and a weak Christmas shopping season, Statistics Canada said on Friday. Department store sales fell 9.6 percent.

Sears Canada's shares closed at C$9.30 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

2,000 pound turtle could be extinct within 20 years

Feb. 26, 2013 ? An international team led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has documented a 78 percent decline in the number of nests of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) at the turtle's last stronghold in the Pacific Ocean.

The study, published online February 26in the Ecological Society of America's scientific online journal Ecosphere, reveals leatherback nests at Jamursba Medi Beach in Papua Barat, Indonesia -- which accounts for 75 percent of the total leatherback nesting in the western Pacific -- have fallen from a peak of 14,455 in 1984 to a low of 1,532 in 2011. Less than 500 leatherbacks now nest at this site annually.

Thane Wibbels, Ph.D., a professor of reproductive biology at UAB and member of a research team that includes scientists from State University of Papua (UNIPA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia, says the largest marine turtle in the world could soon vanish.

"If the decline continues, within 20 years it will be difficult if not impossible for the leatherback to avoid extinction," said Wibbels, who has studied marine turtles since 1980. "That means the number of turtles would be so low that the species could not make a comeback.

"The leatherback is one of the most intriguing animals in nature, and we are watching it head towards extinction in front of our eyes," added Wibbels.

Leatherback turtles can grow to six feet long and weigh as much as 2,000 pounds. They are able to dive to depths of nearly 4,000 feet and can make trans-Pacific migrations from Indonesia to the U.S. Pacific coast and back again.

While it is hard to imagine that a turtle so large and so durable can be on the verge of extinction, Ricardo Tapilatu, the research team's lead scientist who is a Ph.D. student and Fulbright Scholar in the UAB Department of Biology, points to the leatherback's trans-Pacific migration, where they face the prevalent danger of being caught and killed in fisheries.

"They can migrate more than 7,000 miles and travel through the territory of at least 20 countries, so this is a complex international problem," Tapilatu said. "It is extremely difficult to comprehensively enforce fishing regulations throughout the Pacific."

The team, along with paper co-author Peter Dutton, Ph.D., discovered thousands of nests laid during the boreal winter just a few kilometers away from the known nesting sites, but their excitement was short-lived.

"We were optimistic for this population when year round nesting was discovered in Wermon Beach, but we now have found out that nesting on that beach appears to be declining at a similar rate as Jamursba Medi," said Dutton, head of the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center's Marine Turtle Genetics Program.

The study has used year-round surveys of leatherback turtle nesting areas since 2005, and it is the most extensive research on the species to date. The team identified four major problems facing leatherback turtles: nesting beach predators, such as pigs and dogs that were introduced to the island and eat the turtle eggs; rising sand temperatures that can kill the eggs or prevent the production of male hatchlings; the danger of being caught by fisheries during migrations; and harvesting of adults and eggs for food by islanders.

Tapilatu, a native of western Papua, Indonesia, has studied leatherback turtles and worked on their conservation since 2004. His efforts have been recognized by NOAA, and he will head the leatherback conservation program in Indonesia once he earns his doctorate from UAB and returns to Papua.

He has worked to educate locals and limit the harvesting of adults and eggs. His primary focus today is protecting the nesting females, eggs and hatchlings. A leatherback lays up to 10 nests each season, more than any other turtle species. Tapilatu is designing ways to optimize egg survival and hatchling production by limiting their exposure to predators and heat through an extensive beach management program.

"If we relocate the nests from the warmest portion of the beach to our egg hatcheries, and build shades for nests in other warm areas, then we will increase hatching success to 80 percent or more," said Tapilatu.

"The international effort has attempted to develop a science-based nesting beach management plan by evaluating and addressing the factors that affect hatching success such as high sand temperatures, erosion, feral pig predation and relocating nests to maximize hatchling output," said Manjula Tiwari, a researcher at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in La Jolla, Calif.

Wibbels, who is also the Ph.D. advisor for Tapilatu, says that optimizing hatchling production is a key component to leatherback survival, especially considering the limited number of hatchlings who survive to adulthood.

"Only one hatchling out of 1,000 makes it to adulthood, so taking out an adult makes a significant difference on the population," Wibbels said. "It is essentially the same as killing 1,000 hatchlings."

The research team believes that beach management will help to decrease the annual decline in the number of leatherback nests, but protection of the leatherbacks in waters throughout the Pacific is a prerequisite for their survival and recovery. Despite their prediction for leatherback extinction, the scientists are hopeful this species could begin rebounding over the next 20 years if effective management strategies are implemented.

Utah liquor bill aims to take down 'Zion curtains'

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Wine spritzers are a favorite at Rovali's near Salt Lake City. Behind the bar, in full view of patrons, waiters siphon soda and syrup into glasses of ice ? then they duck behind a fake olive tree and a barricade to add the chardonnay.

Utah's famously strict liquor laws forbid the restaurant from pouring alcohol in front of customers. The ban is based on the idea that the state should shield the mixing of cocktails and pouring of drinks from children. "Zion curtains" went up around the state as part of a compromise after lawmakers lifted a mandate in 2010 requiring bars to operate as members-only social clubs.

But this year, the curtains may be coming down.

Utah lawmakers are considering whether to repeal the requirement, a move that would ease restrictions and encourage new business. Right now, the requirement applies to restaurants that are less than 3 years old.

Doing away with the curtain would mark yet another small step by the state to relax its liquor laws.

Lawmakers have introduced a handful of pending bills this year that would ease Utah liquor regulations, including a measure allowing customers to order a drink before they order food and another to make more liquor licenses available to restaurants.

They are scheduled to discuss whether to do away with the curtains Wednesday; the measure has not yet been voted on by either chamber.

The so-called Zion curtains have a long history in the state. The nickname nods to Utah's legacy as home to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The barriers first went up decades ago in the social clubs that existed before bars were legalized in 2009, unmistakable glass walls separating customers from bartenders.

Those who oppose today's Zion curtains say the law forces restaurant owners to waste money and space on configurations to keep bartenders out of sight of patrons using barriers or strategically positioned service bars. Curtain opponents also say the law hinders tourism by annoying outsiders and reinforcing their perception of Utah as staunchly sober.

Rovali's, an Italian restaurant in Ogden, opened in 2010. When waiters there explain the state's befuddling liquor laws to out-of-towners, Montanez said, "You see the eye roll."

"That kind of stifles guests," he said. "They're a little rankled by these weird laws."

Some lawmakers warn that removing the mandate could encourage underage drinking and influence customers to drink too much.

The majority of Utah legislators and residents belong to the Mormon church, which teaches its members to abstain from alcohol.

"Alcohol is a drug," said Sen. John Valentine, R-Orem, who opposes the law. "It has social costs. We have DUIs. We have underage drinkers. We have problems that are caused by drinking."

Valentine said he would consider supporting the proposal if the state promised trade-offs such as bulking up police presence around restaurants and nearby roads, or a measure keeping children from entering restaurants serving liquor.

For restaurant owners moving into existing spaces, the law presents a nightmare, said Rep. Ryan Wilcox, R-Ogden. Restaurants sometimes have to cut into floor space, he said, where more tables should be.

"It really just hampers the new guys, the little guys," Wilcox said. "A lot of these guys, too, they're not large operators. They've got one shop: 'This is my restaurant. My lifelong dream. I've invested everything into this.'"

At Rovali's, Montanez plays sommelier for guests who order wine service, setting off a presentation that underscores the patchwork nature of current laws. Montanez opens the wine at the table and invites guests to sniff the cork. If they purchase the bottle, he can pour and serve the bottle. If they order by the glass, however, he must slip away to pour the drink behind a partition.

"Everything we do is show," Montanez said, likening the visible pouring of drinks to a dessert cart.

The display of pastries and sweets bolsters dessert sales at the restaurant by about 15 percent, he said. And Montanez estimates that taking the curtain down would boost wine sales by a similar margin.

"You can't get creative, that's for sure," he said of the partition. "You have to stick with the rules."

Melva Sine, president of the Utah Restaurant Association, said the curtain mandate confuses diners and raises eyebrows. Utah should impose one set of rules for all restaurants, regardless of their start date, Sine said.

"It lessens consumer confidence: What's the reason that you're doing this in the back room?" she said.

Sine rejects the notion that the visible flow of liquor would tempt youngsters to drink.

"We have got to stop feeling like everyone who drinks alcohol is doing something wrong," she said. "We all want people to go out and enjoy themselves and be responsible."

Woman, 22, a 'person of interest' in Vegas shooting

(Reuters) - Police identified a 22-year-old woman on Tuesday as a "person of interest" in the slaying of an aspiring rapper who was shot and killed while driving his Maserati on the Las Vegas strip and for the deaths of two more people in a fiery crash that ensued.

Las Vegas police said Tineesha Lashun Howard was riding in a black Range Rover with prime suspect Ammar Harris when he opened fire on the Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. before dawn on Thursday.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was mortally wounded and his silver sports car veered out of control, colliding with a taxicab in an intersection at the heart of the strip, near several casino resort hotels.

Harris, 26, has been the subject of a multistate manhunt since the incident, and police say he has a long criminal history that includes arrests for robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping and soliciting prostitution.

Police believe Harris is "involved in the sex trade," said Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Bill Cassell.

Harris is described as having several tattoos, including a large black-eyed owl on his neck and small heart on his upper right cheek.

Police officials described Howard as a "missing and possibly endangered individual" from the Miami area.

"She's listed as a missing person," Cassell said. "How she went missing is part of the Miami Police Department's investigation."

Several photos released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed Howard and Harris together in each others' arms. In one of them they are seen riding in a sport utility vehicle, possibly the Range Rover.

The Range Rover used in the shooting, which bore paper dealer plates, has been impounded by police, but officials have not said where they found the luxury sport utility vehicle. No weapons were recovered from inside.

Earlier on Tuesday, Las Vegas taxicab companies pledged $35,000 toward a reward fund for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Harris.

Authorities say the dramatic shooting in a busy intersection of the desert resort city may have stemmed from a verbal altercation in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino a few blocks away on the Strip.

The incident took place less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

What the sequester means for most Americans

As the clock ticks down in another federal budget battle, warnings are growing more dire about the consequences of not reaching a deal by the end of the month.

The so-called budget sequestration would force about $85 billion worth of across-the-board spending cuts that would ripple through the federal government and broader economy.

Here?s a look at what caused the impasse and what it may mean for most Americans.

Is this the same as the ?fiscal cliff?? I thought they fixed that problem.

Not exactly, though we have seen this movie before. If "The Fiscal Cliff" was last year?s runaway Hollywood blockbuster disaster movie, "The Sequester" is this year?s sequel ? complete with the same plot line and your favorite politicians in starring roles.

The original script was written in July 2011 when, as part of that summer?s horror hit, "Debt Ceiling Debacle," Congress and the White House agreed to a set of tax hikes and spending cuts so onerous everyone assumed the shoot-ourselves-in-the-foot budget package would be replaced with a sensible plan by Jan. 1, 2013. In late December, a last-minute deal diffused the tax increases on all but the wealthiest households, but lawmakers punted the spending cut deadline to March 1.

So they?ll just do another last-minute deal again. This March 1 doomsday scenario is just hype, right?

Maybe. Recent dire warnings from the Pentagon to the Transportation Department are clearly aimed at putting pressure on Congress to come up with a deal.

But if the gridlock persists, and lawmakers don?t reach a deal soon, the spending cuts baked into the current law could indeed create havoc with some government services and popular programs. That?s because the law bars government agencies from making rational, considered decisions about which programs to fully fund and which ones to cut entirely. So it?s not the depth of the cuts so much as the way they?re required to be made that?s cause for alarm.

But don?t we need to cut federal spending?

Sure, but this is not the way to go about it. Say you took a pay cut and had to figure out how to cut your household spending by 10 percent. You?d probably gather the family around the kitchen table, review where the money goes each month and figure out what you can do without. No more ordering Chinese three times a week. Maybe you have to downsize to a mobile phone plan with fewer minutes. Belt tightening is always painful, but done carefully you can usually get back to a more or less normal life.

Now suppose there was a law that said ? instead of making careful, considered decisions ? you had to spend 10 percent less on every bill that comes in. If you pay the phone company only 90 percent of your bill, sooner or later they?ll shut off service. Try paying your landlord 90 percent of your rent and see how long before you get served with an eviction notice.

For that matter, try ordering just 90 percent of a new submarine for the Pentagon. It?s not like you can just lose the sunroof and skip the upgraded exterior trim package.

That?s what makes the process so disruptive ? even though the total cuts are relatively small.

This is insane. Why would anyone come up with a plan like that?

Because when it was written, the threat of a down-the-road disaster seemed like a better option than letting the U.S. Treasury default, an outcome that was just days away in July, 2011. To break that high-stakes deadlock, the sequester process was specifically (some say perversely) designed to create havoc with every single federal agency it applies to. The threat of the expected chaos, along with a six-month cooling off period, was supposed to bring Congress to its senses and usher in a more rational, orderly budget process before the chaos of sequester cuts took effect.

What kind of chaos are we talking about here?

Until we hit the March 1 deadline, it?s impossible to know for sure. Some agencies and departments, including the Pentagon, are already getting ready to furlough workers. Because they need to give 30 days? notice, those staff cutbacks aren?t expected to kick in until April 1.

By then, unless a new budget deal is in place, you could begin seeing the impact fairly quickly. With fewer TSA workers, travelers could see longer lines and delays in airport security checkpoint. Fewer FAA Air Traffic Controllers means fewer planes in the sky, which means ongoing flight delays or cancellations.

"It's going to be very painful for the flying public," warned Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood Friday.

Furloughed food inspectors could force some processors to shut down. The IRS has warned that your tax refund will be delayed if there are fewer workers to review and process your return. With fewer workers showing up at the FBI and Justice Department, criminal cases could take longer to investigate and prosecute.

Doctors would get paid less to see Medicare patients, and could have to wait longer to collect those fees. Households collecting federally-funded, extended unemployment benefits would get smaller checks. Farmers face cuts in crop subsidies.

No wonder they?re called ?across the board?cuts. Would any part of the government be spared?

Yes. Social Security checks and Medicare benefits to patients won?t be cut. (But some of the workers who process those checks could be furloughed, which would delay payments to recipients.) Programs for low-income households, including food stamps, Medicaid, children?s health benefits the earned income tax credit, would be exempt from cuts. Federal retiree and veterans? benefits would also be spared.

Military personnel are exempt, but the Pentagon has said some 750,000 civilian workers would face furloughs.

And for all the disruption, we?d get very little serious deficit reduction. That?s because these cuts apply largely to so-called ?discretionary? spending. The vast bulk of ?mandatory? Social Security and Medicare spending would be left untouched. Those are, by far, the biggest contributors to the federal deficit.

Won?t this hurt the economy?

It won?t help. Some jobs will be cut (the White House estimates about 750,000) which the economy can ill-afford with unemployment a 7.9 percent. But the roughly $85 billion in mandated cuts represents only about a half-percent of annual U.S. gross domestic product.

This is crazy. How did we get into this mess?

The federal deficit has been expanding for some time, through multiple administrations, but the 2007 recession and 2008 credit crash made the problem a lot worse. Social Security and Medicare ? largely off-limits to the sequester ? need to be reformed by raising more money, pare future benefits, or both.

The good news is that there are a number of credible proposals to fix these problems and plenty of time to get fiscal policy on track to help the economy continue to get back its feet.

Unfortunately, despite the sequester?s original goal of spurring Congress to act, there?s little evidence that lawmakers are any closer to getting to work on those big, broad solutions.

So if they do somehow come up with a deal March 1, are we through with all this nonsense?

Not necessarily. Because Congress hasn?t passed a formal budget in years, government spending is currently authorized only through late March. That creates yet another deadline for yet another disaster movie sequel. Unless yet another budget deal can been reached, look for "Continuing Resolution" to open in theaters Mar. 27.

And watch for the trailer on the next coming attraction, "Debt Ceiling Debacle II," due later this year.

South Dakota legislator calls MMA ?Child porn of sports,? while governor says it?s too violent

A bill to create an athletic commission in South Dakota is going nowhere fast, largely thanks to the ignorance of Gov. Dennis Daugaard and state house Rep. Steve Hickey.

Their primary objective is to ban sanctioned mixed martial arts in the state. In a blog post, Hickey writes that, "MMA Cage Fighting is the child porn of sports."

The lack of knowledge and the lack of research both Daugaard and Hickey showed about MMA has to be frightening for persons who live in South Dakota. If they can't be bothered to do the minimal research required to learn that MMA is far safer than other "mainstream" sports, including football, it's scary to think about the laws they'll pass in the state regarding education, health care and budgets.

The UFC is the largest MMA promoter in the world. No fighter has ever suffered traumatic brain injury, let alone died, in the UFC's 20-year history. A 2006 study done by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and which appeared in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine found MMA has far less traumatic brain injury than other sports.

Mixed Martial Arts competitions have changed dramatically since the first Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1993. The overall injury rate in MMA competitions is now similar to other combat sports, including boxing. Knockout rates are lower in MMA competitions than in boxing. This suggests a reduced risk of TBI [traumatic brain injury] in MMA competitions when compared to other events involving striking.

MMA events must continue to be properly supervised by trained referees and ringside physicians, and the rules implemented by state sanctioning?including weight classes, limited rounds per match, proper safety gear, and banning of the most devastating attacks? must be strictly enforced. Further research is necessary to continue to improve safety in this developing new sport.

A 2008 study released by the British Journal of Sports Medicine reached the same conclusions. After a five-year study, its authors wrote:

Injury rates in regulated professional MMA competition are similar to other combat sports; the overall risk of critical sports-related injury appears low. Additional study is warranted to achieve a better understanding of injury trends and ways to further lower injury risk in MMA.

The simple fact is that a random NFL player is at far greater risk of a serious brain injury than is a random MMA fighter. Sadly, neither Gov. Daugaard nor Rep. Hickey bothered to do much investigation or educate themselves before speaking out.

South Dakota state house Rep. Mark Johnston introduced a bill to create an athletic commission in the state for the express purpose of making the sport safer. According to the Argus Leader, Johnston said his goal is to prevent unregulated events where tragedies could possibly occur.

A state athletic commission's job is, at the core, to protect the fighters. It makes sure the proposed matches are fair and that promoters have doctors and an ambulance at all events. The commissions also require qualified referees, who stop fights when one fighter is in danger. It also requires fighters to undergo extensive medical examinations before fighting to make certain they are fit to compete. States such as Nevada, California and New York, with strong commissions, have discovered injuries fighters didn't know they had and prevented them from competing. That wouldn't be the case in South Dakota, with no commission to require those tests.

A fear of many states with strong commissions is that promoters will travel across state lines to put on shows in states such as South Dakota, where there is no regulation and where, as a result, costs are less. But the result is that it is far less safe for the competitors.

Sadly, neither Daugaard nor Hickey recognize that. Hickey told the Argus Leader he was angered by the thought of his state sanctioning MMA.

I'm offended that the state would legitimize cage-fighting and the bloody violence that those kinds of spectacles create. I think it's interesting that we declare that it is a crime for one human being to strike another, and yet the state now proceeds to legitimize, and label a sport, cage-fighting.

With all due respect, Gov. Daugaard, a few points:

? It is a crime for one human to strike another outside of the bounds of athletic competition. But it is no crime to strike another in the context of sport and when doctors and referees are available to protect the athletes and where the athletes have signed a contract to compete against each other.

? MMA fights sometimes get bloody. But no fighter to my knowledge has ever suffered anything worse than scarring as a result of being cut. It is important to note that a lot of the cuts are on the forehead above the eyes, where they mix with sweat and make them seem far worse than they are.

? States that have athletic commissions ban fighters who have sustained head injuries from competing again for several months. And before even being allowed to practice in a gym, the fighter needs to be cleared by a doctor.

? MMA is a combination of sports, many of which are already legal in South Dakota, including boxing, wrestling, karate, jiu-jitsu and judo.

Judge refuses to toss gay Calif. veteran's lawsuit

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A lawsuit brought by a lesbian Army veteran and her wife over the denial of disability benefits can move forward over the objections of the Department of Justice, a federal judge in California ruled Monday.

U.S. District Judge Consuelo Marshall refused to dismiss Tracey Cooper-Harris' challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act and to two other laws that make same-sex spouses of military veterans ineligible for benefits available to straight spouses. Marshall did not explain her reasoning in court, but said she would issue a written ruling at a later date.

The Justice Department under President Obama has refused to defend the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, and argued that the U.S. Supreme Court should strike it down as unconstitutional when it hears arguments in another lawsuit next month.

But the department had asked for Cooper-Harris' case to be tossed out on the grounds that veterans' claims can only be heard by an administrative Board of Veterans' Appeals.

Cooper-Harris suffers from multiple sclerosis and receives disability benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. She and her wife, Maggie Cooper-Harris, got married in California during the brief period in 2008 when same-sex unions were legal in the state.

Citing the Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, and veterans' benefits laws that define a spouse as a person of the opposite sex, the VA denied the couple's application for additional money and benefits that married veterans are entitled to receive.

In the case of the couple, they would receive about $150 more a month in disability payments, and Maggie Cooper-Harris would be eligible for about $1,200 a month in survivor's benefits if her wife died, said Southern Poverty Law Center deputy legal director Christine Sun, who is representing the couple.

Even though the Supreme Court is set to examine the Defense of Marriage Act, the justices could end up issuing a narrow decision that does not settle the question of whether the act is constitutional, in which case it would remain important for Cooper-Harris' case to remain active, Sun said. Marshall has scheduled the next hearing for April 1.

"The significance of the court's ruling today is it vindicates the right of Tracie and Maggie Cooper-Harris to go forward to have their day in court," she said.

Ohio gas prices down to start week

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohio motorists are seeing slightly lower gas prices to start the work week.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Ohio was about $3.70 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's about 12 cents lower than a week ago.

The Ohio average is about 8 cents lower than the national average of 3.78, which is a nickel higher than the national average price of a week ago. The national average has risen 44 cents in the past month.

The Ohio average is about 30 cents higher than a month ago, but just a few cents higher than at the same time in 2012.

Hubble sees a glowing jet from a young star

Feb. 24, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image showing an object known as HH 151, a bright jet of glowing material trailed by an intricate, orange-hued plume of gas and dust.

It is located some 460 light-years away in the constellation of Taurus (The Bull), near to the young, tumultuous star HL Tau.

In the first few hundred thousand years of life, new stars like HL Tau pull in material that falls towards them from the surrounding space. This material forms a hot disc that swirls around the coalescing body, launching narrow streams of material from its poles. These jets are shot out at speeds of several hundred kilometers (or miles) per second and collide violently with nearby clumps of dust and gas, creating wispy, billowing structures known as Herbig-Haro objects -- like HH 151 seen in the image.

Such objects are very common in star-forming regions. They are short-lived, and their motion and evolution can actually be seen over very short timescales, on the order of years. They quickly race away from the newly-forming star that emitted them, colliding with new clumps of material and glowing brightly before fading away.

New Bulgarian patriarch enthroned by tarnished Orthodox Church

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's new Orthodox patriarch was enthroned in a mass in Sofia on Sunday that leaves the soft-spoken theologian the task of restoring the reputation of a church hurt by links to businessmen and communist secret police.

Neofit, Bishop of Rousse, took over the 1,100-year old church, which survived centuries of Turkish domination and decades of communism, just as Bulgaria heads for early elections by May after the government resigned on Wednesday during protests over the cost of living and corruption.

Protesters in Sofia kept a promise to stay away from the capital's main cathedral, St. Alexander Nevski, so as not to interfere with the ceremonial mass of inauguration.

About 80 percent of Bulgarians say they are Orthodox Christians - the mainstream religion also in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Greece, Romania and Serbia, but only few see churchgoing as important to their lives, recent surveys show.

Trust in the Orthodox Church was shaken after a history commission showed in January 2012 that 11 of its 15 bishops collaborated with the former communist era secret police.

Neofit, born Simeon Dimitrov, also had a file with the much feared Darzhavna Sigurnost, but while his 16-page entry contained information about him, it preserved no reports made by him to the police.

The election by a church council of the bespectacled Neofit, 67, known for theological learning, humble demeanour and exquisite singing, was welcomed by believers and analysts who see him as a worthy successor to Patriarch Maxim who died in November aged 98.

"Neofit will be a patriarch who will not shame Bulgarians. He will restore the spiritual dignity of the Church," said political analyst Nikolai Mihailov.

The luxurious lifestyle of some bishops has fed disillusionment with the church, and the restoration of the little known church title of archon -- given to businessmen often after hefty donations - has also stirred disapproval.

Neofit graduated from the Theological Academy in Sofia in 1971 and specialized in Moscow for two years. He took the name Neofit and was sworn in as a monk in the Troyan Monastery by late Patriarch Maxim in 1975.

He taught church singing at Sofia's Theological Academy, led its choir and was its rector before becoming a bishop in 1994.

Neofit's inauguration coincided with the last Sunday address by Pope Benedict, leader of millions of Catholic Christians, before his resignation.

Bands, floats, and dancers took over Palm Canyon Drive Saturday afternoon for the 16th Black History Month Parade.

Thousands of people lined the street to continue the Palm Springs celebration of Black History Month. ?

"It brings people together from all cultures, and it brings us together to accept each other for what we are. That's why I'm here," Fern Bennett said.

Black History Month started in 1976 to celebrate the importance of black achievement and contribution in the United States.

"I love it because it represents everything that should be represented with with black community," Matthew Haynes said.

Haynes said that's equality, pride, and love for everyone.

"What they've gone through and how they've come to be where they are," he said.

"It makes it feel like they support who we are nowadays more than they did back then," Carlee Appling said.

The streets were filled with people of all walks of life and all ages.

"I always like diversity, this is great. To see it, we're all getting along, and enjoying ourselves. I'm really glad to be here," Bennett said.

On this beautiful afternoon, there was a lot to see, and a lot to celebrate.

Later that day, the top of a cypress in a planter facing east in a row of elegant brownstone houses that the sun had long since left, glowed gold ? revealing what looked suspiciously like a smile.

Reflection from high windows opposite those grateful recipients had transformed their appearance, along with those of other windows all the way down that avenue to the house where the founder of the Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, taught many classes. For those windows, sunrise and sunset had momentarily been reversed ? freed of the restraints of time ? confirming that there are no holds on beauty or goodness! City canyons that normally would never see the sun glowed in reflected light.

Humanly speaking, clouds and the revolution of the earth would sometimes interrupt such activity, but those remarkable moments do point us toward deeper consideration of the role of reflection ? not sun-made or man-made, but God-made. At any time we are flawless reflectors, inseparable from our source, divine light, Truth. As the Apostle Paul wrote in the eighth chapter of his Epistle to the Romans: ?Nothing in all creation can separate us from God?s love for us? (verse 39, Contemporary English Version).

Mrs. Eddy explained further: ?Few there are who comprehend what Christian Science means by the word reflection. God is seen only in that which reflects good, Life, Truth, Love ? yea, which manifests all His attributes and power, even as the human likeness thrown upon the mirror repeats precisely the looks and actions of the object in front of it? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 23).

Our inseparability from our divine source was further clarified when Mrs. Eddy wrote that as images of Love we have not ?a single quality underived from Deity? and possess ?no life, intelligence, nor creative power of [our] own,? but reflect ?spiritually all that belongs to [our] Maker? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 475). And this, we learn, includes good health, harmonious relationships, and peace of mind.

It doesn?t matter where and when the sun rises and sets, or whether clouds blow our way or not. God remains the source of our light and life, and our ability to reflect His goodness cannot be impaired or interrupted. All we need are open arms, a clear surface, stillness, and the wisdom to look in the right direction to become aware of it. As willing reflectors, we are reached by the light wherever we are.

Given the richness and abundance of God?s resources, just think of the scope we all have to live lives that stretch way beyond that analogy of sunlight on tall buildings. It?s our union with the Christ ? ?the spiritual idea of divine Love? (Science and Health, p. 38) ? that makes the difference. It allows us to mentally step inside God?s embrace and draw all those around us into the warmth and security of a permanently sunlit place.

Mystery Nokia Lumia appears with Verizon bands at FCC

Can you smell it? Smartphone season is in the air. Along with recent leaks for the Lumia 720 and Lumia 520, another handset from Nokia was just tipped -- this time at the FCC. The phone in question is known only as the RM-860, but with support for LTE bands 4 and 13, it carries the telltale marks as a Verizon smartphone. As you may recall, Nokia revealed earlier this year that it aims to bring high-end, mid-range and low-end Lumia smartphones to AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Given the relatively blah Lumia 822 that's already at Big Red, could this be a sign that Verizon is set to gain its own iteration of the Lumia 920? Or, might it be that the carrier is aiming for lower hanging fruit?

McAfee Security Updates Combat Security Fatigue - IT Business Edge

One of the more uncomfortable realities of IT security today is that it?s not so much about prevention as much as it is remediating the inevitable security breach.

Security vendors across the board are starting to recognize this, the latest of which is McAfee. The company has released an upgrade to its ePO security management system that allows security administrators to query thousands of assets across their enterprise in seconds.

Gretchen Hellman, director of product marketing for SIEM at McAfee, says McAfee Real-Time for ePo not only gives IT organizations access to more predictive analytics than ever, it provides insights into the overall incident response process.

That analytics capability has now also been tightly integrated with a new version of McAfee Enterprise Security Manager, which is the security information event management (SIEM) platform that McAfee gained with its acquisition of NitroSecurity in 2011.

Hellman says that what differentiates McAfee?s approach to SIEM most is a correlation engine that allows the SIEM to better understand the overall IT environment, resulting in not only fewer false positives over time but also better identification of risks to the business that are based on the actual business value of any given system or application. In fact, with this release Hellman contends that SIEM is transforming from being passive monitoring into an automated incident response platform that can automatically send policy commands to McAfee software and integrated partner solutions.

A lot of IT organizations are suffering from security fatigue that results directly from having to constantly defend against an ever-increasing number of sophisticated attacks. The only way to overcome that fatigue is to rely on more automation to manage the security process. At the rate things are going, most IT organizations should be coming to that conclusion shortly.

GOSHEN, Indiana ? Union workers at a northern Indiana trailer-hitch manufacturer have voted to forego arbitration and accept a severance agreement that will pay the most senior employees $36,000.

Most of the 350 United Steelworkers Local 9550 workers at Cequent Performance Products in Goshen supported the package in votes tallied Friday night, Local 9550 Vice President Deb Hathaway said.

"No matter what they give us it's still not enough for us losing our jobs," she said.

Steelworkers Sub District 4 Director Mike O'Brien said 240 of the 350 union members at the plant voted. He didn't disclose vote totals.

"It was certainly not unanimous but it wasn't close," O'Brien said. "I think a lot of people looked at, 'Well, this is what the company is offering and we take a chance going to arbitration.'"

Cequent, a subsidiary of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan-based TriMas Corp., announced in November it would move operations from the 450-employee plant 25 miles southeast of South Bend to Reynosa, Mexico, to lower shipping costs.

Workers with less than a year's seniority will receive $500 while those with 30 years or more will receive $36,000. Workers also will receive company health benefits for at least a month after they are laid off. The total severance package is worth more than $3.5 million, O'Brien said.

Layoffs began Friday, but O'Brien said he didn't know how many workers lost their jobs.

More than half the employees are scheduled to remain on the job through the end of June, with the last due to be let go in December.

Castro surprised those on hand when he mentioned retirement and urged reporters to pay close attention to a speech scheduled for Sunday.

HAVANA -- Cuban President Raul Castro has unexpectedly raised the possibility of leaving his post, saying Friday that he is old and has a right to retire. But he did not say when he might do so or if such a move was imminent.

The Cuban leader is scheduled to be sworn in to a new five-year term on Sunday. Castro urged reporters to listen to his speech that day.

"I am going to be 82 years old," Castro said at a joint appearance with visiting Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. "I have the right to retire, don't you think?"

When reporters continued to shout questions about his plans for the next five years, Castro replied: "Why are you so incredulous?"

Between them, former president Fidel Castro and brother Raul have ruled Cuba since the 1959 overthrow of U.S.-backed Fulgencio Batista. One of the conditions the U.S. has stated for ending a decades-old embargo against its old Cold War enemy is that neither brother be in power.

He said to listen carefully on Sunday.

"It will be an interesting speech," he said. "Pay attention."

Castro's tone was light and his comments came in informal remarks at a mausoleum dedicated to soldiers from the former Soviet Union who have died around the world.

The Cuban leader has spoken before of his desire to implement a two-term limit for all Cuban government positions, including the presidency. He has also alluded to the limited time he has left to overhaul the island's weak Marxist economy.

That has led many to speculate that this upcoming term would be his last, though term limits have never been codified into Cuban law.

Most Havana residents had not heard about Castro's comments, which had not been reported on Cuban television. Many reacted with skepticism.

"Who would they put in?" asked Marta Alvarez, a 45-year-old housewife walking through Old Havana. "But I don't think it would be now. It would happen in five years."

Castro will be 86 when his next term ends in 2018. Up until now, all eyes had been on who would emerge as Castro's first and second vice presidents during Sunday's proceedings. The positions are currently occupied by two loyal octogenarians who fought in the 1959 revolution.

Putting someone younger in one of those roles would be the first sign that Castro was settling on a potential next-generation successor, something he and his brother Fidel have never done, even as many comrades have succumbed to old age.

As far back as December 2010, Castro began to reflect on his responsibility, and that of his aging generation, to right Cuba's economy, noting that the actuarial tables leave them few remaining years.

"The time we have left is short, the task is enormous," he told lawmakers in his year-end speech that year. "I think we have an obligation ... to set (the country) on the right course."

When Raul Castro does leave the political stage, it would end more than a half century of unbroken rule by the two brothers, who came to power in 1959 at the head of a revolution against U.S.-backed strongman Fulgencio Batista.

Relations with the United States have been sour since shortly after the revolution. One of the key provisions of the 51-year U.S. economic embargo on Cuba stipulates that it cannot be lifted while either of the Castros is in power.

Castro has implemented a series of economic and social reforms since taking over from his ailing brother in 2006, but the island is still ruled by one party. Fidel Castro is 86 and retired, and has seemed increasingly frail in recent appearances.
