Anniversary of Glass Milk Bottles Day

Before milk was delivered or dispensed in glass bottles, it was simply poured or ladled into whatever container was available. As one might imagine, this was far from hygienic. But on April 8, 1879, the first glass bottles were used to deliver this popular food and drink product, which changed the history of milk consumption.

The trend caught on, and soon after the turn of the century, some cities were actually requiring that milk be delivered in bottles. As with most things in the early 1900s, milk bottles were reused over and over again. In fact, the average milk bottle made 22.5 round trips between merchant and consumer before it was broken, lost or used for some other purpose.
